Official representatives of the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs in the North-West Federal District are participating in the project «International cooperation in the Northern Europe, 2008» of the Nordic Council of Ministers’ programme of «Exchange of civil servants». The overall objective of this exchange programme is to promote and strengthen cooperation in the Nordic region and neighbouring countries by developing competencies and establishing contacts between the Nordic countries and North West Russia. Such an initiative could contribute to enhancement of awareness on Russian-Nordic cooperation in the international network institutions.

On 20 November the closing conference in the frames of “Social Work with Juvenile Delinquents” project took place in St. Petersburg, attracting over 120 participants. The project was implemented in St. Petersburg in 2000-2008 under Sida’s funding. The goal of the project was to develop methods for crime prevention, social adaptation and rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents and apply them in the work of St. Petersburg social bodies.
The main partners in the project were the Stockholm University and the St. Petersburg Committee on Labour and Social Security. The co-partners were the St. Petersburg Commission for Juvenile Cases of the Committee for Justice, Legal Order, and Safety; the St. Petersburg Committee on Youth Policy and Social Organizations Interaction; Main Headquarters of the Federal Penitentiary Service in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region (GUFSIN); the City Court of St. Petersburg; and the Central Internal Affairs Directorate in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region (GUVD). The project was coordinated by the Stockholm region Office in St. Petersburg.

On 30 September – 3 October the VIII session of the Russian-German Forum
“Petersburg Dialog” took place at the premises of the St. Petersburg State
University. The theme for this year was “Russia and Germany in a Global World –
Modernization Partners”. The Forum attracted many public figures and high-rank
officials, including Dmitry Medvedev, President of Russia, and Angela Merkel,
Chancellor of Germany.

Issue 105, 2008, week 40
On 27 September for the first time ever St. Petersburg celebrated Europe Day. The Delegation of the European Commission to Russia in collaboration with Consulates General and Culture Centres of EU Member States had prepared a most diverse programme.
The opening ceremony, which was followed by the interactive debates “Borders of Europe and the European Identity”, took place at the Grand Hotel Europe. Some Consulates and Culture Centres invited to the Open Doors events at their premises, offering information on cultural and educational programmes, tourism, quizzes and free language lessons.

The Leningrad Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry in cooperation with the
Northwest Business Development Centre Nordica started arranging a group of business
visitors to the Scandinavian Technical Fair 2008 to be held at Stockholm International
Fairs on 21-24 October.

St. Petersburg – Helsinki Ferry Connection Renewed
On 1 August the ferry connection between Helsinki and St. Petersburg was renewed after a long brake. Julia ferry was launched by the Finnish operator Stella Lines. In 2008 the ferry is expected to make around 70 calls at the St. Petersburg port. The cost of a one-way ticket is EUR 50. The ferry holds 700 people and 400 cars. The ferry line will operate the whole year round.

North-West Business Development Centre "Nordica" and Leningrad Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry started to collect applications for participating in business mission to Scandinavian Technical Fair 2008 that will take part in Stockholm on 21-24 October. The fair is included in the list of high-priority trade fairs for 2006-2008 approved by the St. Petersburg Government on 21 November 2005. During the trip a visit to the Trade Representation of the Russian Federation in Sweden will take place. Business Development Centre "Nordica" became official partner of the “Robot technical Congress” at “Stockholm International Fairs” in 2002. Leningrad Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry organises such a trip for the second time. Number of participants is not limited

On 10-11 June 2008 the Russian-Swedish Forum took place in St. Petersburg attracting over 600 participants from Russia, Sweden and the EU. The Russian-Swedish Forum became a great opportunity for hundreds of project owners and other stakeholders to meet with the purpose of sharing experiences and discussing forms and priorities of the future co-operation.
By the end of 2008, the Swedish national financial support of Russian-Swedish projects, provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency SIDA, is to be phased out. The Russian-Swedish Forum was therefore devoted to discussion of the fifteen-year co-operation between Sweden and Russia, prospects for the future, as well as experience exchange in such areas of collaboration as environmental protection, social and health care, democracy and human rights.

XII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, 6-8 June
On 6-8 June 2008 the XII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum will take place. Conducted under the auspices and with participation of the President of the Russian Federation, the Forum annually gathers world leaders to discuss issues of current importance faced by Russia and the world community. Traditional participants of the Forum are presidents, prime ministers, heads of parliaments, and ministers of a number of countries, as well as the international business elite, editors-in-chief of the biggest world mass media and other newsmakers.

The Eco Center of Renewable Resources was created for promoting and developing of alternative renewable energy resources in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, as well as for dissemination of usage of new technologies in environmental engineering and private environmental energy systems, such as for instance the concept of "Passive House".
